Analysis of other Web Quests about African American Women
She's Special Too - This web quest is very logical and well organized. It was short sweet and to the point. Everything was spelled out and easy to follow. There is a very nice list of very different African American women for the student to choose from to research and learn about. I do feel like this is a little too easy for high school students. One suggestion I would have to make it more challenging is to have them compare and contrast two of the women they are writing about. Another issue is that there were many broken links. This web quest certainly contributes to awareness of African American women and helps to break down stereotypes and develop a positive image.
African American Women In History - When and Where I Enter - This web quest is well planned and organize. The introduction is thought provoking. The assignments are a reasonable length and help students dig a little deeper. The expectations are very clear. I like that the students are asked to compare 5 women instead of choosing just one. I think the time line and power point presentations are a good way for students to show what they have learned. The web quest is written for 3rd to 5th graders. I believe it is on the right level for them. One downfall of this web quest is that I did notice a few broken links. There were not as many links as I expected to see on a web quest. The subject matter, and the tone of this web quest casts a positive light on African American women in history and helps the students think about why many of these women may not have received the attention they deserve. That plants the seed and helps the cause in the future,
Rosa Parks Webquest - This web quest was not as involved as many of the others. It was very user friendly. I liked the part where the teacher put a link to the dictionary and a list of words to look up. I feel like on a whole this web quest is lacking something. It was simple and does not leave much room for searching. It would be a good lesson for elementary school children, however I am not sure it is much of a web quest. I would suggest a more involved task than answering questions, maybe doing some artwork or writing a poem. There were several broken links in this web quest.
The Depiction of African American Women in the Hip Hop/Rap Culture - This web quest is not about feminist
writers, but the theme of it lends itself to the topic of feminism. There were many great points about this web
quest. The subject matter is relevant
and worth exploring. The tasks Assigned
in this web Quest were very creative.
The students are to research women in the hip-hop culture and then not
just write about it, but make a video about it.
They are also assigned to write a positive rap song about women, and
make a music video about it. This is
something high school students could get into. I did find many dead links in
this web quest, and the organization lacking.
I feel more of the assignments listed in the process should have been
included in the task section. It was a
little hard to follow. It was also very
long and complex, which could make it hard to implement. I do believe this web quest contributes
valuable resources to start an important conversation starter for African
American feminism.
